Carriage of personal effects where such shipments are not provided by another transport operator or mover should be handled in compliance with the requirements of the group insurance policy. Such personal effects shipments must be handled in the following manner in order to minimize the exposure to loss and liability.

•  Seaworthy Packaging

All personal effects cargo is to be in seaworthy packaging. Example: personal effects in liftvans, sturdy crates, or sturdy cartons secured on pallets are acceptable. Whereas personal effects in loose bundles, hand-carry luggage, loose items without sturdy external packaging, or in single-corrugated carton boxes are not regarded seaworthy for consolidation container carriage and should be declined.

•  Clear and Clean Marking Details

Origin container freight stations receiving the personal effects are to ensure that all external packaging are clearly marked with the consignee address, contact person and destination phone number.

•  Packlist and Itemized Value

Origin office is to ensure that there is a packlist with itemized values as declared by the shipper.

•  Personal Effects in Wooden Crates, Liftvans, or Burlap (Gunny Bags) Bags

Depending on country specific regulations, fumigation and certification may be mandatory prior to shipment. Origins must not accept personal effects in said packaging, if the shipper declined the fumigation charges, even thou it is the destination country regulation.

•  Personal Effects Shipped by Household Removal Companies

For personal effects cargo from Household Removal Companies (appearing as shipper and consignee on the Bill of Lading), if seen to be in less than seaworthy packaging (as defined in item i), then the customer must be advised to improve the external packaging, at their cost. If the customer declines to improve packaging, then the customer must be informed that our House of Bill of Lading will be clause “At Cargo's Owners Risk and Liability”.

•  Personal Effects Shipped by Private Individuals

All personal effects shipped by Private Individuals, (appearing as shipper and consignee on the Bill of Lading), MUST be covered by an All Risk Insurance Policy. Do not accept the shipment otherwise. Exception - the customer agrees to our House Bill of Lading being clause “At Cargo's Owners Own Risk and Liability” plus a shipper's “Letter of Indemnity”.
